PEI Potato Growers participating in Open Farm Day 2016

(Charlottetown – September 13, 2016)  PEI Open Farm Day is this Sunday, September 18th, with thirty farms across the province opening their doors to welcome the public to learn more about where their food comes from, as well as highlighting the value of agriculture to our economy and our culture.  A full list of participating farms is available at www.peiagsc.ca/openfarmday

Three potato farms are welcoming visitors this year as part of Open Farm Day.  One of these farms is Klondike Farms, owned and operated by the Hogg Family in Wilmot Valley.  Klondike Farms is a sixth generation family farm that grows 650 acres of potatoes for processing and seed, as well as growing 1300 acres of grains, oilseeds, and forages.

At Klondike Farms, visitors will be guided through the different stages of harvesting, storing, and grading their potato crops, with farm and industry representatives on hand to answer questions and demonstrate everything that takes place on their farm.  As well, there will be displays showcasing different varieties of potatoes as well as the many uses of potatoes for a range of products.

In addition, guests will be treated to freshly baked potatoes and Lays potato chips, will have a chance to meet our potato mascot “Tate,” and can take advantage of our down on the farm photo booth!  Klondike Farms will be welcoming visitors from 11 am until 3 pm.

Other potato farms taking place in Open Farm Day include Rollo Bay Holdings in Eastern PEI, and Potts Farm in Argyle Shore.  At Rollo Bay, the Keenan Family is giving guided tours at 12 pm and 2 pm as well as giving visitors the opportunity to dig their own potatoes to take home, while learning more about how potatoes are grown.  At Potts Farm, freshly harvested new potatoes will be for sale, while they are also giving horse and wagon rides from 1-4 pm.

We hope that many Islanders and visitors to the Island will visit several of the farms opening their doors this Sunday.   See you on the farm!
