(Charlottetown, PE – March 6, 2024) – Three local farms are teaming up for yet another Fill Your Boots Event, inviting Islanders to choose their own free potatoes directly from their potato storages. The event promises to build upon the resounding success of similar events held over the past two years.
Monaghan Farms in Norboro and Spud Isle Farms of St. Peter’s Bay have joined forces with G. Visser and Sons (Orwell) with support from the PEI Potato Board. The event is set to take place on Saturday, March 9th, from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm.
Participants are encouraged to bring a bucket, bag, boot, or any other creative means of storage to fill with as many potatoes as they can carry. While the potatoes are free for the taking, the farms invite attendees to bring along a donation for the local food bank if they are able, recognizing the pressing needs of many in the community.
This initiative goes beyond just providing free potatoes; it’s an opportunity for Islanders to connect with local farmers and gain insight into the intricacies of farming. Since the first event in 2022, six Island farms have opened their doors, welcoming over 6,500 visitors who collected over 200,000 lbs of potatoes. The farms also raised $14,000 for local food banks.
Event-founder Randy Visser of G Visser and Sons said “we are thrilled to host “Fill your Boots” again this year. This event gives us the opportunity to connect with our fellow islanders around a big pile of potatoes. It will be a great time all around, and everybody goes home with full boots, and we give the food banks a boost as well.”
The participating farms and locations are as follows:
G Visser and Sons – 6346 Trans-Canada Hwy, Orwell Cove
Monaghan Farms – 23402 Rte 2, Norboro
